to join their team. The Director of Facilities Services reports to the Associate Vice President of Operations, and is responsible for facilities planning, capital projects, maintenance and operation of state-funded facilities, grounds maintenance, heating plant, utilities/energy management and the development and management of facilities-related budgets. The Director oversees the University of Montana’s Mountain campus as well as Missoula College’s River and West campuses, and is responsible for 110 employees and a $12.5 million operations budget.

Working collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including representatives from Montana State Government, Montana University System, city and county government and University of Montana administrators, the Director supports the University’s mission and vision for the campus.

Key Responsibilities of the Director Position:

Provides direction and management for facilities planning, oversees building projects as well as major remodeling efforts, and leads maintenance operations and management for the University of Montana’s buildings, including 2.4 million square feet of academic and administrative space, and 177 acres of grounds

Ensures responsible management and use of University resources, including the development and management of facilities-related budgets, bidding processes for projects and contracts, and oversight over outsourced contracts

Maintains a mission-driven perspective when considering facilities initiatives; aligns facilities initiatives with the needs of faculty and staff and desired enhancements to the student experience

Promotes environmentally sustainable choices and strategies across all facilities operations in cooperation with the Office of Sustainability; leads and promotes efforts to achieve greater energy efficiency in all facilities operations, develops strategies to obtain the greatest economies in energy purchases, directs efforts to attain increasingly high conformance to LEED standards

Cultivates effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, customers and service providers; serves as the lead for complex inquiries and complaints related to the University’s buildings and grounds

Supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of three Associate Directors; promotes a culture of accountability, integrity and customer service for all 110 Facilities Services employees

Ability to understand unique needs of the member organizations within a multiple-campus system and develop strategies tailored to the needs and requirements of each; assist other University of Montana campuses in Butte, Helena and Dillion with facilities issues, as needed

Leads the development of capital project planning in accordance with the University’s strategic plan and campus facilities master plan; communicates the Campus Master Plan to both on-campus and off-campus stakeholders, including State of Montana Capital Planning Officials

Directs and prioritizes effective preventive maintenance programs that preserve the University’s capital assets in the most cost-effective manner; actively seeks to address deferred maintenance and stewardship of existing campus resources

Provides technical information and consultation to UM departments and community members looking to utilize campus facilities

Provides input into the strategic and long-range master planning for University’s buildings and grounds

Position Details

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

Salary for this position is $120,000 - $135,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree

At least five (5) years of professional experience as a senior administrator in a facilities management environment.

Education and extensive experience in applying management and administration principles in a complex organizational environment

Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership and vision in the development and maintenance of the campus infrastructure

Demonstrated experience effectively managing a unionized workforce and ability to recommend contractual improvements to the University System’s contract negotiations team

Understanding of the University’s mission and how the Facilities Services Department supports the University’s mission

Collaborative leader who develops relationships across the organization; clear understanding of the chain of command and ability to work in an environment that requires an understanding of multiple stakeholders’ positions; openness and flexibility in considering solutions and strategy development

Experience with complex building and infrastructure systems and the ability to utilize knowledge and experience to solve difficult problems

Demonstrated experience developing productive relationships and achieving favorable outcomes with state and local authorities having jurisdiction in areas of zoning, land use, site development and building code enforcement

Ability to communicate to a wide audience with varying technical knowledge/understanding complex issues or technical problems

Demonstrated ability to delegate, motivate and inspire employees and foster a culture of customer service and integrity

Strong financial management skills and a demonstrated ability to prioritize needs and utilize creative problem solving to accomplish desired objectives

Knowledge and understanding of the issues and challenges surrounding a centralized steam plant and tunnel system

Demonstrated commitment to energy conservation and sustainable facilities management

Strong work ethic and ability to build a team to actualize organizational goals

Utilizing the theories, principles and practices of engineering, architecture and planning, recommend appropriate courses of action to repair, renovate or construct buildings to meet the needs of the University

Preferred Qualifications

Recent history of successful leadership as a Director or Associate Director of a campus facilities operation

Professional certifications such as PMP, LEED AP, FMP, CFM, etc.

An advanced degree in a facilities or business-related field including architecture, engineering, or business, as examples

Experience working within a multi-campus environment

Understanding of Montana University System’s and the State of Montana’s’ policies and procedures related to capital construction projects

A passion for working within an academic community and a commitment to higher education

About Facilities Services and UM

The mission of the University of Montana Facilities Services department is to assist in the development of a physical environment supportive of teaching, research, and administration on the University of Montana campus through the operation and maintenance of the state funded physical plant, and to provide services to the auxiliaries as required. It is also Facilities Services’ mission to provide leadership with respect to capital improvements to promote quality designs that facilitate operations, enhance employee retention, exceed student and visitor needs and reduce operating costs.
